My personal journey into network marketing..
You may be here because you want to get some answers about the network marketing industry, you may be wanting to earn some additional income for your family, or your just ready for a change but your not sure how to do so. Like most people to begin with, including myself, you probably have some doubts about the legitimacy of the network marketing industry.
First of all, let’s talk about why I personally chose to pursue a career in network marketing.
Like many people, I was unhappy in my employment before I decided to make the change. I was working big hours, and running my own business. I had the ultimate goal of retiring at an early age, so I could spend more time with my family, travel the world, and achieve my ultimate dream of FREEDOM. I was getting ahead, but was having to make some sacrifices to do so. I wanted to work hard for my kids, so I knew that they would be able to live life more freely, have the right education behind them, and be able to live a life that would be free of todays financial pressures. I just couldn’t comprehend working until I was 70, and then spending whatever years remained of my life to be able to do the things I wanted to do, with that ultimate feeling of freedom.
‘the secret of happiness is freedom, the secret of freedom is courage’.
Don’t get me wrong, these things are still high on my priority list, but my number 1 goal right now is happiness, and it hasn’t taken me long to achieve this. Life is too short, too short to not wake up every morning feeling excited about the day ahead. This was something that was quite few and far between for me at the time. Lets be honest here, who actually enjoys waking up in the morning, saying goodbye to their family, and trekking off to work?
I understand that there is need for a workforce, and not everyone can work from the comfort of their own home, though with technology continuously advancing and taking over our jobs, and unemployment rates on the rise, there are now more opportunities and possibilities for people to take the path in the direction of working from home than ever before.
“the richest people in the world look for and build networks. Everyone else looks for work.” Robert Kiyosaki
I was so caught up in my efforts to reach my own personal goals, that I was sacrificing far to much to achieve these goals. I was sacrificing spending time with my family, my friends, and activities I enjoyed doing. I was sacrificing being able to enjoy my life right there and then. I believed that the harder I worked, and the more money we saved, the sooner I’d be able to do all of these things. The only downfall, I wasn’t happy. I thought I was doing the right thing by my family, but looking back on it now, I was risking keeping my family together to give them a better life. I just wasn’t aware at the time that there was actually another way. A way that would allow me to be happy, spend time with my family and earn an income from home at the same time.
The day to day stresses were starting taking their toll. The pressure that I was putting myself under, to try and reach my goals were too unhealthy. It was either change something, or continue through life the way that we’ve all been taught and compromise my family for it. The only downfall, the way I’d been taught was only way that I knew.
So what could I do? The thought of change was a daunting one.
‘most people never get wealthy simply because they are not trained to recognise the opportunities right in front of them’.
It was at this time that I was offered to meet with an old client of mine to look at a ‘business opportunity’. I was quite pumped as this guy was a very successful businessman. He had a nice home on the water in a highly sought after area, a nice car, and all the gadgets you could poke a stick at. I thought to myself, this must be a great opportunity if he’s the one offering it.
I met with him the following day, and to my disappointment at the time, he offered me a position under him in affiliate marketing. I felt pretty gutted, I’m not sure what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn’t network marketing. I knew nothing about network marketing, but like most people, I instantly had the thought that it was no good. I mean, there’s no credibility in network marketing right? You can’t make a sustainable income in network marketing? These things are just pyramid schemes right? Wrong!
“if I were given the chance to start all over again, I would choose network marketing.” Bill Gates
I decided I’d give my previous client the time and respect to hear him out, after all, he was a successful businessman and he had decided that he was selling up his large business to pursue this opportunity full time. This was probably the number 1 thing that caught my attention, the fact that someone with so much success, so much knowledge and so much experience would sacrifice his business to pursue this further.
The fact that he was working directly with a number of people that had created success through network marketing, and had seen how happy they were in doing so, gave him the belief and hunger to want and achieve what they had. So I listened, I fired questions at him, I was as sceptical as I could possibly be, but I decided to stay open minded as I knew I needed a change.
‘we can not become what we want by remaining what we are’.
In the next few weeks I continued to be sceptical and ask questions, and I did as much research as I possibly could. After a while, I came to the realisation that there was a lot of potential in this industry, and my partner and I eventually decided to give it a shot. We decided to go into it with the attitude of ‘what do we really have to lose’. It was a small investment, and we were purchasing products that we’d heard some good things about. They were also products that we were interested in and were willing to use.
We decided that if we were both happy with the products, then we’d have a go at marketing them in our spare time, and hopefully even earn an additional income at the same time. We went to events, we listened, we learned, and the more we got involved, the more belief we were beginning to have about the legitimacy of this industry. We were continuously talking with people that were doing this as full time job, which helped us come to the realisation that if they were able to do it, then what was actually stopping us from doing it and also succeeding. They were just normal people, with normal backgrounds, they had just managed to see the potential of this industry, and were also able to stay open minded about the industry. They believed in the products that the were selling and they were passionate about the products they were selling, which was a massive key to their success within the industry. We found that everyone we mingled with within the industry, were just so happy. We wanted this. It was now just a matter of us making it happen.
“in order to succeed, we must first believe that we can.” Nikos Kazantzakis
We now had the belief and the basic knowledge about network marketing, there was just one more hurdle that we had to jump. The credibility of being involved in network marketing, and what people would think of us for doing this. I highlight this, because I personally believe that these are the two biggest things that hold people back from taking the step in the direction of network marketing and succeeding with it. You will need to make the decision of what’s more important to you.. happiness, freedom and being able to spend quality time with your family or what people are going to think of you if you decide to go down the path of network marketing.
‘enjoy life today, because yesterday is gone, and tomorrow is never promised’.
The more we dove into network marketing, the happier we were becoming. The closer our family were becoming. And I soon realised that the most important things for me were my family, and spending quality time with my family. We soon realised that we didn’t care about what people thought of us, as long as we were happy. They were the ones that were missing out. They were the ones that would go through their lives unhappy, and living the day to day rat race that we’ve all been taught to live.
If you think you can overcome the thought of what people will think of you for choosing this road, and decide to commit to it full time, you will be grateful of doing so. Test out the waters first, start off part time like most of us do, it doesn’t need to interfere with what you are currently doing. There’s no set hours or set workload, do it at your own pace. Build your knowledge base, and don’t get disheartened if you fail at first, because most of us do. There’s never any commitments when it comes to network marketing, it’s a matter of what you are willing to put into it, is what you will get out of it in return. Learn from your mistakes and move on, the only person that you can let down in this industry is yourself. It’s no get rich quick scheme, it takes some time and effort, and if the opportunity sounds to good to be true then it probably is. Do your research, explore your options, choose something that your passionate about, work hard, and the rest will fall into place.
‘network marketing is the big wave of the future, it is taking the place of franchising, which now requires too much capital for the average person’.
